Settlement Houses, Changing Neighborhoods, and Adaptation for Survival: An Examination of Merrick House in Cleveland’s Tremont Neighborhood and Its Place in the Wider Context of the Social Reforms of the United States, 1919-1961

If above link does not work, try thisFounded in 1919, Merrick House has served the residents of Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood continuously for one hundred years. Despite the longevity of this settlement house, there has been no substantial scholarly works published on its history. This thesis focuses on contextualizing the founding of Merrick House and its operation over roughly forty years in the same neighborhood within the national settlement movement of the early twentieth century. It also explores the significance of Catholicism within the institution and its close association with the Christ Child Society of Greater Cleveland through the examination of manuscript collections held by the Western Reserve Historical Society as well as a variety of published sources.

Children today are more connected to the world than any generation in history.
They have access to information and social networks at their fingertips, but with opportunity comes danger – predators lurking in the shadows of the internet. With the summer quickly approaching, now is the time to be informed about the dangers of our digital world. Parents often tell their children not talk to strangers and issue directions on how to stay safe in public places like malls and playgrounds. But how many parents give those same warnings about interactions on the internet?
Our panel of experts:
U.S. Attorney: Justin Herdman
FBI Special Agent in Charge: Eric Smith
Cleveland Metropolitan Schools Psychologist: Bill Stencil

Before Dimora and Russo, there was Gray: A look back at another Cleveland pay-to-pay corruption probe by Eric Heisig Cleveland.com July 2, 2019
CLEVELAND, Ohio — It was one of the largest public corruption probes in Cleveland history. Allegations arose that influential people received tens of thousands of dollars in bribes, which turned into millions’ worth of government contracts.
It was also years before the local pay-to-pay political atmosphere came to light through another, more well-known probe into Cuyahoga County’s government.
The FBI’s investigation into Cleveland began in 2002 and led to convictions against eight people. Leading the pack was Nate Gray, a connected businessman and longtime confidant to former Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White who was released last month from federal prison.

Our panelists will explain the structure of the Ohio judicial system and the role local judges play in our everyday lives. And they’ll give you the tools you need to research judicial candidates so you can make informed choices on Election Day. Please join us on Tuesday, May 7 – and bring a friend!

William D. Rich, Emeritus Professor, University of Akron School of Law; Chairman, Summit County Board of Elections
Catherine Turcer, Executive Director, Common Cause Ohio
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
It’s been nine years since The Supreme Court issued its Citizens United Ruling. While we know campaign financing has increased exponentially, what we don’t know is where all the money’s coming from. Dark money, money from non-profit political action committees (PACs) that do not require source disclosures, has become more prevalent in state and local office campaigns. What can we do, if anything, to shed light and stem the flow.
