Hunger is a growing problem in Shaker Hts that is estimated to impact over 5,000 residents yearly including children, adults and seniors. What are we doing to make sure every person has access to the food they need? How can we do better?

Founded in 1919, Merrick House has served the residents of Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood continuously for one hundred years. Despite the longevity of this settlement house, there has been no substantial scholarly works published on its history. This thesis focuses on contextualizing the founding of Merrick House and its operation over roughly forty years in the same neighborhood within the national settlement movement of the early twentieth century. It also explores the significance of Catholicism within the institution and its close association with the Christ Child Society of Greater Cleveland through the examination of manuscript collections held by the Western Reserve Historical Society as well as a variety of published sources.

On June 23, 1969, a day after the fire on the Cuyahoga River, Mayor Carl Stokes took reporters on a four-stop pollution tour. It would turn out to be the last fire on the river. We retraced the tour 50 years later.

Children today are more connected to the world than any generation in history.

They have access to information and social networks at their fingertips, but with opportunity comes danger – predators lurking in the shadows of the internet. With the summer quickly approaching, now is the time to be informed about the dangers of our digital world. Parents often tell their children not talk to strangers and issue directions on how to stay safe in public places like malls and playgrounds. But how many parents give those same warnings about interactions on the internet?

CLEVELAND, Ohio — It was one of the largest public corruption probes in Cleveland history. Allegations arose that influential people received tens of thousands of dollars in bribes, which turned into millions’ worth of government contracts.

It was also years before the local pay-to-pay political atmosphere came to light through another, more well-known probe into Cuyahoga County’s government.

The FBI’s investigation into Cleveland began in 2002 and led to convictions against eight people. Leading the pack was Nate Gray, a connected businessman and longtime confidant to former Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White who was released last month from federal prison.
